John & Sandra live in a 4-bedroomed house in the Arnold area of Nottingham. Now retired, they spend a lot of time doing voluntary work and helping out with looking after their grandchildren. They have moved home 14 times over the years giving them both a wealth of experience in what they really want from a property. Savvy and knowledgeable with good DIY skills, they were looking for a home improvements company that could live up to their understandably high expectations.
The Leigh’s garden is L shaped, therefore unless they’re sitting outside it’s not possible to appreciate in its entirety. And of course, in the colder months of the year, this isn’t a viable option anyway.
They also wanted to replace an old patio that was directly outside a set of French doors that led out from their living room. This combined with the fact that they wanted more space for when their children and grandchildren came to visit prompted them to consider some kind of extension on the back of their house.
Their main points of concern were how a substantial extension could be achieved without having a negative impact on their garden and which home improvements company could be trusted to do it.
John & Sandra visited Stormclad’s Showroom at Brookfields Garden Centre in Mapperley, Nottingham. There we have a full range of fully decorated conservatories in a beautifully landscaped area that shows the quality and workmanship that goes into our products. They had an informal chat with Dean Goodwin, Senior Designer, who booked a free one-hour Design Consultation with Designer, Keith Whitehurst, for them.
Keith came to their home in order to fully understand their specific needs and to see how he could come up with a design that would harmonise perfectly with their property. After listening to all of their requirements and taking measurements Keith proposed a gable fronted uPVC conservatory that would give them superb views. Measuring 5m long with a projection of 3.5m, not only would it provide an extra 17.5m2 of extra living space, it wouldn’t take up too much of the garden. It would in fact, neatly cover the space that was previously taken up by the old patio.
They chose anthracite grey uPVC frames on both the inside and outside with our stylish 2800 Decorative casements windows that feature smooth contours and symmetrical design. With two external doors on either side of the conservatory, easy access would be ensured to both sides of their garden.
Because the garden is south facing, Keith recommended using our SMARTGLASS®-Ultra 86 for the roof. It has been designed to reflect 86% of the sun’s rays whilst optimising the amount of light that is allowed to flood in. It’s the best performing glass on the market today. He also recommended installing SMARTGLASS®-W for the conservatory walls – this innovative glazing cuts out 50% of the sun’s rays whilst offering 240% better solar protection than standard glass. This combination of only allowing 14% UV light through the roof and 50% through the walls was to ensure the new conservatory would remain comfortable all year round regardless of how hot is outside.
Another factor for Keith to consider was the fact the rear of the Leigh’s property was clad in timber. Rather than completely stripping this off, he suggested keeping the cladding to make it a feature on the inside of the conservatory. As can be seen from the photos this has worked extremely well creating a soft architectural look that is juxtaposed with the modern anthracite grey frames.
A 450mm high dwarf wall with a plaster finish was incorporated into the design providing a solid distinction between with garden outside. It was also the perfect place to locate the electrics that included four double sockets and a heater.
Our highly-experienced team supported the couple from the initial design consultation right through to the installation and completion of their new conservatory to ensure that the brief was fulfilled to a high standard.
The conservatory is a beautiful addition to Mr and Mrs Leigh’s home. It provides superb thermal efficiency and excellent security so that the couple can enjoy the views of their garden in both summer and winter periods.
We were able to enhance their home and exceed their expectations by creating a space that felt homely, secure and completely unique to them.
This is what Mr Leigh had to say about his and Sandra’s experience of choosing Stormclad for their home improvements:
“I’d like to thank Stormclad for their support throughout the design, delivery and installation of our new conservatory. Everybody was extremely helpful from the outset. The Installation Team were very professional and friendly causing no disruption to our daily lives.
“We can now view our garden better than ever and we’re very happy with the outcome. I was particularly pleased that I could reach the head of the team managing my installation easily and quickly to discuss the work whenever I had any queries. I would highly recommend Stormclad to my friends and family, it couldn’t have gone any better.”
